An ergonomic plate designed for users with impaired grip
Project Overview
User Focus
Arthritis in the hands can cause joint pain, inflammation, and reduced muscle control, making everyday tasks like gripping and holding a plate difficult. The thumb’s carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is particularly important for gripping and pinching, yet is often affected by arthritis.
Design Opportunity
Existing adaptive plates can feel medical or childlike, place excessive pressure on the thumb, and compromise on comfort, size, weight, or microwave compatibility. This project explores how thoughtful industrial design can make eating more comfortable and accessible without sacrificing aesthetics or ease of use.
The Goal
The goal is to develop a modern, ergonomic plate that reduces strain on arthritic hands through a thicker, easier-to-grip rim and cushioned contact points, while maintaining a familiar, intuitive user experience.

Form Exploration
The plate’s form evolved through several iterations, beginning with an exploration of how users distribute the effort required to hold a plate. By utilizing more of the underside for support, the design aims to reduce pressure on the thumb, a potential source of pain, while allowing the other fingers to play a more active role in gripping and supporting the plate.
With this functional approach established, I shifted my focus to aesthetics, exploring how to seamlessly integrate these ergonomic accommodations into the plate’s overall form without compromising its modern, familiar appearance.

Third Iteration

The final design is a round plate that has a thick lip optimal for wrap the fingers around the plate. Underneath the lip there is a subtly placed cushion hold for extra grip support.
Details
The plate features a hollow interior structure to reduce weight, making it easier to lift and carry. A soft, rubber-like cushion is integrated beneath the plate’s lip to provide a more comfortable and secure grip. The plate itself will be made from a lightweight, durable material, finished with a ceramic-look glaze to achieve the appearance of traditional ceramic tableware without the added weight.
